District and County ScoutingScouting in the UK is divided into Counties and Districts, all under the national umbrella of the Scout Association. 8th Purley Scout Group is within Croydon District, which is within the Greater London South West (GLSW) county. The large double badge worn on the right sleeve of our uniforms is the combined Croydon District and GLSW County badge.Croydon District 8th Purley Scout Group is one of about 48 Scout Groups in the Croydon District. Croydon is the largest District in the GLSW County, and provides Scouting to over 2000 young people. Croydon District run a number of camps, events and activities for members in the Croydon District, such as camping competitions, first aid training weekends, challenge hikes, and fun days. 8th Purley take part in as many District events as possible, competing against other other Groups in the District. Croydon District also have 2 Scout camp sites at Bears Wood in Forestdale, and Pinewood in Shirley. 8th Purley often camp at Bears Wood camp site and take part in other activities on site including archery and wall climbing. For more about Croydon District, see Croydon Scouting Greater London South West County The GLSW County covers a large part of South West London, from Croydon and Purley to Kingston, Richmond and Wimbledon, and provides scouting to over 10,000 young people. GLSW run a few large competitions every year in which Groups from all over the GLSW County can take part. 8th Purley try to take part in as many County events each year, including the County Night Hike, the County Orienteering competition, and the County Cooking Competition. GLSW run a large number of training courses for adults in Scouting. All leaders at 8th Purley take the British Red Cross Basic First Aid course run by GLSW.
