GSL Report Winter 2010

This is the report from GSL Yvonne Lamont to St. Mary's Church, Sanderstead, for Winter 2010

The Group has yet again had a busy and fun time over the summer.

The Beavers finished for the summer with a Masquerade ball after completing a healthy eating challenge. We sadly had to say goodbye to Karan who was moving to Liverpool.

The Cubs had their annual summer camp visiting Blacklands farm went canoeing going over the assault course and swimming. They learnt how to cook out of doors and work as a team. 3 Cubs achieved their Silver Chief Scout award.

Over the summer period the Scouts had the opportunity to camp on several camps with a total of 20 nights under canvas on offer.

Summer camp this year was at the end of August and we once again made our way up to Scotland to camp beside the beautiful shawers of Lock Ken. The camp did not start well when we got a phone call from Brian and Nick who were travelling up over night with all the kit, tents, food and all the other equipment that is needed to say that the van had broken down and could not continue up. The decision at 2am was do we cancel camp or try to hire another van with all the extra costs and continue. We were lucky that Brian and Nick found a company to hire a van from and after unloading and reloading they continued up now closely follower buy the Scouts and Explorers. We all eventually arrived at 1am but had contacted the farm and made arrangements for everyone to sleep in the barn overnight as we were all too tired to put tents up that night.

The next day the camp started and the Scouts and Explorers put up tents collected wood started a fire and settled down for a week of fun and adventure. For 2 days we went to the Galloway sailing centre were sailing, canoeing, kayaking, Climbing, mountain biking, 200’ zip wire, crate staking, were one team were 2 crates of the centres record of 32 crates, Laser quest and much more. The rest of the week was spent hiking, swimming in the Otter Pool, Archery on site and visited a wild life centre were just some of the activities we enjoyed. Josh Melody with his Jack Patchy award money had bought 2 Dutch ovens and the Scouts spent one afternoon making bread, sponge cakes and scones in the ovens over the wood fires. This was a great success and they were eaten as soon as they came out of the ovens it was great fun making out own bread on camp. The camp finished with the now traditional visit to the cream o’ Galloway ice cream factory and to the beautiful sandy bay of Sand Green were we swam in the sea. During the camp we were hearing of rain and yet more rain in Purley were we were basking in glorious sunshine even bring back sun tans. During the camp the Explorers were waiting with batted breath for GCSE results and on the morning of results we all were excited as they started to come though. They all did well and so that evening the Explores went out for a slap up hotel meal to celebrate their successes. Everyone came home tired but all enjoyed the week and are now looking forward to next years camp.

At the start of the term we all enjoyed a BBQ with the church for what is now becoming an annual event for the pertronal festival. This was a great success and we look forward to next years were we can all get together again.

This team we have had a team complete a survival challenge and we entered a team for the district cooking competition. The theme of the competition was Mediterranean food. The menu was decided and lots of practising was under taken the menu was mouth watering it started with a Spanish omelette tomatoes drizzled in olive oil and olives, a lemon chicken dish from Greece Mediterranean vegetables and lemon cuscus was the main course and finished with Mediterranean citrus fool. The judges loved the fool and were even licking out the bowls!!!!!!!! The team came 2nd by just 1 ½ points. We were all very proud of them as the winning team was a lot older. They are now all looking forward to next year’s competition.

The Scouts are now all working hard on this year’s panto. All our older Scouts have now gone on to Explorers so we have a young troop so there is a lot of Scouts that this will be there first panto. The panto has now been an annual event for the troop for the past 13 years and the Scouts put a lot of hard work in rehearsing each week and at weekends painting the secrecy and making the props.

During ½ term 28 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers had a group visit to HMS Belfast and The Tower Of London. The weather was awful but this did not stop the visit. Whilst on Belfast we experienced a 21 gun salute which was very loud and exciting. At the Tower we saw the armour and a one group went to see the crown jewels. One Beaver was very excited and proud when they saw the ‘Scout badge’ on the Queens crown encrusted with diamonds and declared in a very loud and excited voice that the Queen must love Scouts as much as him as she has her scout badge on the crown and it was all glittering.

The Beavers and Cubs are planning a camp together in November and are getting very excited.

I am very proud to announce that 8th Purley at the annual Croydon scout awards were award runner-up in the achievement award, for outstanding achievement and quality scouting for young people in Croydon. This is a tribute to all the hard work all the leaders of 8th Purley put in over the year and I would like to thank them for all they do which is often unseen.

We continue on into the New Year and with this year’s success we hope to go from strength to strength. If you are between the ages of 5 ¾ and 70+ and want to join in the Scouting Adventure at 8th Purley or Purley Oaks Explorers please call Yvonne Lamont on 020 8763 2933 we would love to meet you.
