Scouts Badges

There are many badges and awards available to Scouts to recognise their achievements in Scouting or other pursuits.

Core Badges
When you are invested into the Scout Troop, we give you
  • the Scout Membership badge to show that you are a member of the worldwide family of Scouts
  • a name tape to show you are a member of 8th Purley Scout Group
  • a District/County badge to show that your Group (8th Purley) is in the Croydon District and GLSW County
  • a Patrol Badge to show which Patrol you are in
  • a St. Mary's badge to show 8th Purley's affiliation with St. Mary's Church
Challenge Badges
There are 9 Challenge Badges, recognising achievements within the Troop or the community. Most parts of these badges are done through normal Scouting, whether at a meeting, or a camp or another activity. Many Scouts don't even realise that what they're doing counts towards these badges - we simply tick off the parts they do as they do them.

If a Scout gains 8 of the 9 Challenge Badges, they are entitled to receive and wear the Chief Scout's Gold Award

Staged Awards
There are 6 Staged Awards including Music, IT, Nights Away, Swimming, Emergency Aid and Hikes Away. These awards start when a member joins Scouting, whether in Beavers, Cubs or Scouts. If a member has achieved a particular Stage in Cubs, they continue to wear that badge in Scouts until they reach the next Stage.

We focus on the Nights Away, Hikes Away and Emergency Aid badges. Other Staged badges can be earnt in a Scout's own time outside normal scouting.

Activity Badges
There are 69 Activity Badges available to Scouts. A few of these can be gained through normal scouting, whether at meetings or activities, while others are normally achieved in a Scout's own time. For example, the Camper badge will be gained through camping with Scouts, while the Sports Enthusiast badge is gained outside Scouting.

We have posters in the Scout Hut showing all the badges available. If you wish to achieve a particular badge, you should check the badge requirements from the badge pages on the Scout Association website. You should then print the badge requirements sheet from the website and explain to a leader how you qualify for this badge. You may need to show us any certicificates or qualifications, or you may need to write about what you have done to meet the requirements of the badge.

Alternatively, you can review the requirements with a teacher, instructor or sports coach and ask them to sign to say you have met the requirements. You should then show this to a leader.

If you have any questions or need help or advice to complete the badge, please speak to a Leader. We're more than willing to help Scouts gain badges, but we don't simply hand them out just because you want them, you have to earn them!

Badge Information
Information about Scouts Badges and the requirements for earning them can be found online at Scouts.org.uk

Position of Badges on Uniform
If you gain a badge, please sew it on your uniform as soon as possible. Scouts should be proud of their achievements and should wear their badges with pride! While we can give you the badges when you earn them, if you lose them, we will need to charge for replacements.

You should sew badges onto your uniform in the correct places. To see where to sew badges on, click here
